Posted on: 01/12/2009
Black cohosh is a member of the buttercup family and contains isoflavonoids, vitamin C, beta-carotene, and selenium. Numerous studies in Gynecology journals have shown that black cohosh can reduce symptoms in women with moderate hot flashes. No standard dose exists for black cohosh. Most studies have used 40 milligrams of extract per day. Side effects of black cohosh to look out for are headache, lowered blood pressure, and weight gain. If you take pills for iron deficiency anemia, please speak to your doctor as black cohosh can interfere with your medication. -From the OurHealth Writing Team
